What is Obesity?

Obesity is a disease that affects many people in the world with indifference to sex, age, social class and other factors. This disease is due to excess body fat, ie when the body has more calories than they need to survive, these calories are stored in the body causing an excess weight. This does not mean that any person who is overweight is obese. Obese or overweight when already far exceeded the ideal weight. There are different ways of measuring whether a person is obese or just overweight. According to Body Mass Index (BMI) that a person is considered obese if their index (BMI) exceeds 30.

It is a chronic disease, meaning that persists over time. A man or woman who suffers from obesity can not decrease their body fat naturally from one day to another, much as he wishes.

Obesity markedly decreases quality of life of the patient and prevent him from certain activities. Moreover, obesity also causes an imbalance in the body, which has other issues, risks and complications. Obesity may trigger diseases such as diabetes or heart problems can also cause complications including kidney failure, high blood pressure problems, varicose veins, besides being a risk factor for a host of other medical problems. Obesity is also a major risk factor for suffering a heart attack, or stroke.

This disease has no specific cause but may be due to several different endogenous and exogenous factors. In many cases it may be due to poor eating habits and also because of lead a sedentary lifestyle (exogenous), while in other cases it may be caused by other diseases such as thyroid problems (endogenous). It may also have a strong hereditary component and due to a genetic predisposition of man or woman.
